Chiridota heheva is a sea cucumber species found almost exclusively at the margins of hydrothermal vent fields, tolerant of chemical conditions that would be hostile to most other echinoderms. This expedition focused specifically on mapping their local population density.
We counted specimens across a 60-meter transect line at the vent margin, finding a notably higher density on the down-current side of the vent plume than the up-current side — consistent with filter-feeding behavior benefiting from vent-enriched particulates carried by the current.
This is a modest finding on its own, but it adds one more data point to a species that remains poorly studied relative to the more visually striking tube worms and vent shrimp that usually dominate vent research attention.
