    Why We Publish Null Results

    June 20, 2026 admin

About a third of Fathom’s logged expeditions found nothing worth a headline — a survey site that turned out barren, a sonar anomaly that resolved into a rock formation, a species sighting that couldn’t be confirmed on review. We publish all of them anyway.

Null results are unglamorous, but they’re still data. A barren survey site tells the next researcher not to spend a grant re-checking it. An unconfirmed sighting, logged honestly as unconfirmed, is more useful to science than a confident claim we can’t actually back up.

It also keeps us honest with our donors: the expedition log isn’t a highlight reel, it’s the actual record.

We log every dive, successful or not.

Follow the current expedition, or help fund the next one — Fathom is crowd- and grant-funded, with no commercial sponsor attached to any finding.
